The battered tower stands stark white
Against the fiery chaotic skiesAll through the catastrophic night
The battered tower stands stark whiteAs city, land and wood burns bright
When hope for democracy diesThe battered tower stands stark white

This is a great opening (and echoed through the rest of the verse) – it’s like a chord, against the rest of the orchestra – as strong and emphatic as the subject of the poem . Super piece.
A battered white tower makes me think of both war and chess… in the end, we have to fight for democracy always… maybe it can seem tiring but we cannot give up

The battered tower … symbol of strength, heroism, belief, a future we might even trust.
A triolet! Perfect. The form really worked here.
I liked the symbolism of the battered tower, and the image of the ‘catastrophic night’ – dramatically and deftly done!
Strong redcat well written.
