This week’s song choice was inspired by a Google doodle this week. Wednesday the 8th was the birthday of the late Avicii (Tim Bergling). He would have been thirty-two this year. In hindsight it’s easy to think that many of his songs are about his struggles with mental health. And they probably are to some extent. Such problems usually seep out in any work done by a creative person whether it’s intentional or not. When I read through my own writing the pain and suffering shines clear and bright even when I had no intentions to share it. Just last week someone asked how I was after reading something from this summer. And the answer is it’s neither better nor worse. But it made me think again about how much it shows in what I write. And that before I have written it all out of my system I won’t get past it to write something else. Or maybe my characters will always carry a hint of pain and sorrow. Who knows?
The song featured in the doodle is Wake me up! which was a megahit and therefore both loved and hated. I like the lyrics written and sung by Aloe Blacc (you’ll find his acoustic version below) and for someone like me it’s hard not to connect to the video’s story of searching for and finding that place where you belong.
Whatever you think of it. And whether or not you find any hope in the lyrics, I hope you feel like you belong and that you are loved and cherished!
Enjoy!
Wake me up! – Lyrics
Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can’t tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start
They tell me I’m too young to understand
They say I’m caught up in a dream
Well life will pass me by if I don’t open up my eyes
Well that’s fine by meSo wake me up when it’s all over
When I’m wiser and I’m older
All this time I was finding myself, and I
Didn’t know I was lostSo wake me up when it’s all over
When I’m wiser and I’m older
All this time I was finding myself, and I
Didn’t know I was lost
I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
Hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don’t have any plans
Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life’s a game made for everyone
And love is a prizeSo wake me up when it’s all over
When I’m wiser and I’m older
All this time I was finding myself, and I
Didn’t know I was lostSo wake me up when it’s all over
When I’m wiser and I’m older
All this time I was finding myself, and I
I didn’t know I was lostI didn’t know I was lost
