Daily Haibun, August 18th – Fear Of Judgment

Today was deadline for the first writing assignment. I’ve been done since the weekend. Even so I waited. Knowing I shouldn’t tinker to much with the text but… fearing judgment! I realized, after some thought. I haven’t really felt that way when submitting anywhere. When submitting you either get a polite – Thanks, but no thanks. Or a joyous Yes please! And when participating in the writing prompts people tell you what they like, not what they don’t like.

This time the text will be read and critiqued by a small circle. And that fills with with the dread of every once bullied child. Will I measure up? Will I be accepted?

The rest of the day was spent flitting from one task to the next in nervousness. I haven’t even been able to read the others text yet. For fear I will find myself sorely lacking. This will be a true test if I can judge myself kindly.

Do leaves fear falling?

Judgement for its fall colours?

My colours are me

Daily Haibun, August 17th – Paper Trails

I’ve spent more time then I want to admit sorting through paper today. Old bills. Advertisements. Notes from school and daycare. Empty envelopes. Newspapers and magazines. Stacks of children’s drawings.

Once I start I can’t quit until every drawer and heaps on desks are reduced to a minimum.

After a while I started to think about what paper’s we leave behind. And for some reason found myself content that together with old tax returns and employment deals. I will leave a whole bunch of notebooks with poetry and stories. And some books that actually have my writing in print.

Daily Haibun, August 15th – More Words

The last two years I’ve gotten the hang of writing flash fiction. Short short stories in no more then say 100 words. It has helped me let go of my propensity for long rambling sentences. It has made me realise which words really are essential for telling a story. But it hasn’t taught me how to write longer prose stories.

Today I’ve been struggling with the first writing exercise for my writing classes. Finding that my first few drafts is way too short. And right now I’m at a loss for how to make it longer without filling it with unnecessary rambling.

Hopefully I can find a way tomorrow.

Daily Haibun, August 14th – A reading writer

To become a good writer you have to be an avid reader they say. And I always thought to myself, well I got that down pat. Having read a small library’s worth.

What I haven’t realised is that I don’t know how to read whit an eye for how it’s done. Sure I’ve analysed books for an review or for writing litterateur paper’s at uni. And I might know why I think a book is no good. But I’ve never given why a book is really good any thought. I’ve just enjoyed them.

So now I have to learn how to read a book analysing how it’s done. Why it’s good, or bad. Picking its components apart to see how they work. That will be a learning experience even for such an avid reader as me.

Daily Haibun, August 13th – Inner calm

Yesterday’s stargazing was well worth it. Even if it meant sacrificing a bit of sleep. I saw several meteors streak across the sky.

Can’t remember the last time I sat bundled in a warm blanket doing nothing but listen to night sounds and watch the starry sky. Today I felt an inner calm reminiscent of what you get from meditation. I’ve also felt energised. Like the stargazing replenished something I didn’t even know was missing.

Daily Haibun, August 12th – The Perseids

Tonight I’m stargazing. Hoping for a glimpse of the Perseids. While jotting down snatches of words that one day will end up in a story or poem.

Daily Haibun, August 11th – Thinking on your feet

I’m very good at what the title implies. Especially in situations others find overwhelming. But this is not about that.

This is about walking. Once if I took a long and fast walk. I ended up tired in both body and mind. Nowadays I end up with tired muscles and a mind full of ideas. Doesn’t matter if I just focus on my breathing, listen to music or think about tomorrow’s dinner while I walk.

After I cool down my mind is racing with writing ideas. Faster than I could ever capture them all. So let’s hope I manage to catch the best ones.

Fast like the wind blows

Swirling around like fall leaves

Fancies come and go

Daily Haibun, August 10th – Creative Writing

This week is start of term. Not for the kids, for me. During the spring I applied for a bunch of creative writing classes. Fearing I would be accepted to none. Turns out I got accepted to several. Enough that I had to choose.

After much thought and even more self-doubt. I decided on several and took the decision to take a year off work to focus fully on writing.

Feels like going on an adventure!

With fall comes endings

The seeds of new beginnings

A new journey starts
