Daily Haibun, June 22nd – The joy of growing things

I definitely don’t have green fingers. I’m the worst at keeping indoor plants alive. Constantly forgetting to water and nourish.

Outdoor is another thing. Because in the garden grows things to eat. Chives, ruccola and salad. Rhubarb and several kinds of berries.

Today I picked the first homegrown strawberries of the year. Just one each. But they were surprisingly big for first berries. And tasted sweet as only sun ripe strawberries can.

Wether sun or rain
When the strawberries ripens
Summer has begun

Daily Haibun, June 21th – Summer Solstice

The shortest night of the year. On my latitude that means no real night at all. No real dark. Dusk lasts all the way to dawn.

About an hour before sunrise, the overcast sky started to rumble. Those deep booms of thunder, that’s felt in the bones. That awakens sleepers from their dreams.

As I lay holding my youngest child. Reassuring him back to sleep. I took soul deep pleasure at the mighty sound. I’ve always loved thunderstorms.

The last thing I remember hearing before falling asleep. Was my mind starting to compose poetry from the sound, and the first drops of rain.

As thunder booms and
lighting crackles, the witch feels
safe in Gaia’s arms

Daily Haibun, June 18th – Cooling Winds

Today I’m grateful for the wind blowing. Moving the humid heat. Cooling my skin in the glaring sun. Moving the air around. Making it easier to breathe.

Making music of rustling leaves. Waves of bending grass. Swirling puffs of dandelion seeds. Scudding clouds over the sky.

Daily Haibun, June 11th – Mosquitoes and Nettles

As the kids celebrated the start of summer holiday with water gun play in the early evening. I decided to do some garden work. Mostly cutting down the by now meter high nettles that happily grow in the compost. In doing so I came under veritable attack by disturbed mosquitoes. So while I might have avoided the nettle sting, I got a dussin or more mosquito bites. If I have to choose, I prefer the itching to the burning. Both are part of summer.

Mosquitoes swarming
Seeking a warm body’s blood
Just one drop will do

The first warm sun rays of spring
Warm upon my cheek
A breeze turns it into gentle caress
Brilliant light dances behind closed lids
First spring touch kiss my lips
Natures warm embrace surrounds me
Comforting, healing
Life affirming

The Goddess gently touches
Starburst erupts
Showering me with universal love
Connecting me to me
To every living thing
Assuring me there will be a way
A path out of darkness
My trek dotted with oases of calm
Peace, connection, love
Moments of bliss

Secure points in a bewildering maze
Built of old and new trauma
Fear, sorrow, dark despair
Life-ending depression

Inner trust and faith will guide me through
Inborn strength a given armour
Intelligens, wit and wisdom deduce true from false
The quest might be lonely
Yet aided by care and love
Freely given, by friends yet to be found

Breathe
Be still
Accept
Give thankfulness

Use your pen
Jot both now and then
Hone your craft
Draft by draft
Writing will illuminate
Meditation germinate
Revision concentrate
New life emancipate

Gaia Speaks

The Blue Marble –  taken on December 7, 1972, by the crew of the Apollo 17

I am the Earth
I am the sky
The life giving waters
The all consuming fires

To me you belong from birth
Until the day you die
All creatures are my sons and daughters
Through the eons until the sun’s heat expires

Again and again I see souls rebirth
Sometimes a soul ascend, grow wings to with spirits fly
You need to nurture those deep diving free thinkers
To let them hope and change inspire

Otherwise you’ll die on a barren earth
Damned however much you then regrets cry
The time to act is now! Do better!
Do what your mother Gaia requires

Stop being nature destroying vampires!

Written for Poetics: Exploring the Narrative Voice at dVerse. For some reason this one was hard. Perhaps because I needed to choose my narrative voice before starting, instead of just having it happen as I go along.

This is the second time I’ve written in Gaia’s voice. The first was a Gaia’s Nightmare, a flash fiction piece.

The Aurora Butterfly – A Sonnet, April Ekphrastic Challenge

The Aurora male, wingtips like golden dawn
Peek out from the shadowy forest edge
Letting his wings flutter awake and yawn
Hoping he his chances enough has hedged

Is there enough big flower heads nearby
So far devoid of other females eggs
Is the soil deep, rich and suitably dry
Are there any quick hunters with eight legs

Wondering if it’s a warm enough day
If he’s chosen a path with enough light
For a female to at last fly his way
To him the meadow is luminous bright

The male awaits being picked by a queen
Dreams of a female in gold speckled green

Leaping High to Catch the Sky – A Seguidilla

Leaping high to catch the sky
Pouncing down on snow
Still stuck betwixt and between
Spring some way to go
Change is never easy
The nature wise red fox know
Without change no peace

Leaping high to catch the sky
Pouncing down on green
Going betwixt and between
Spirit dare to dream
Find your own true way
The one that makes your heart sing
Whatever the doubters say

Leaping high to catch the sky
Landing in a seam
Living betwixt and between
Nothing as is seems
Let dark doubt depart
You are better than you think
Follow your true heart
