When I read tonight’s prompt at dVerse, a song directly popped up in my mind and I knew I had to incorporate it somehow.

the sickle flashes by.
As I hurry to cut down the corn.

I reap with a happy sigh,
as swift swallows fly.
The field must be done by Sunday morn.

I’ve struggled and hoped,
clinging to a frayed rope.
Until roots took hold, new futures were born.
Now I’ve got to be bold, leave behind what I’ve been told.

Written for earthweal’s weekly challenge: LAMMAS. I was so inspired by the song in the prompt, a 14th century song about the death and rebirth of the barley crop (video below), that I had to write one of my own.

Of sowing and reaping, growing and weeping, of dreams becoming reality.

Längtan till Landet – Saturday Song

Längtan till Landet sung by Oscar Fredriks Vocalis and Cecilia choir. Recorded live in Oscar Fredriks church, 7 maj 2014.

Time for a Saturday Song and tonight you’ll get a Swedish song from 1838. It’s one of the most iconic spring songs, and traditionally sung as we gather round the Walpurgis Night bonfires.

So I’ve been humming this for a couple of days. And miss hearing it sung by a choir as we once again did not gather for the fires due to the pandemic.

The song is titled “Longing for the country”.

I couldn’t find any translations of either text or title. And I don’t have the time tonight to translate it myself. That will have to be a project for another time as something so well known and loved, and written as poetry will take much thought and time to translate.

Let me just say it’s about how winter’s rage is done, spring has come and now we long for the countryside.

I hope you can feel the relieved happiness over spring’s return even if it’s in Swedish.

Again I forgot about my Saturday Song, maybe I should rename it weekend songs, or try to write and schedule them in advance…?

Anyhow. This week I had Scarborough Fair on my mind. Because one of the art pieces for the 13th in April Ekphrastic Challenge (GloPoWriMo for me this year) was a painting of Scarborough Harbour

I have loved this song since I was little. And I got delighted when I found a webpage who details the history of this folk song. Or more correctly the song family, dating back 300 years, that it belongs to.

So I’ll end the week and say good night with this song.

It’s Spring Time Again sung acapella by RedCat

For some reason after reading up on the Green Man I started to think about folk songs and ballads. And one in particular started playing in my head – In folk song tone (I Folkviseton) by Nils Ferlin, a poet who I sang long before I read. It’s a well known love song.

So, I ended up writing a poem that is set to the same tune as Ferlin’s poem. And then making an acapella recording of it. :-)

I’ve had similar ideas befor, but this is the first time I actually managed to pull it together. Which makes me very happy and proud indeed. Maybe someday I will actually reach that elusive song writer place.

There’s been so much writing for GloPoWriMo and Easter this weekend I totally forgot about a Saturday Song.
So you’ll get this since it’s been on my mind since the first episode of the Swedish version of Masked Singer.

I know not everyone likes musicals, but I was brought up with seeing old movie versions and singing them so they hold a special place in my heart.

Written for Poetry Form: Seguidilla at dVerse.

This is a wholly new form for me, so took some work, but you know me. I like these intricate forms. :-)

The Seguidilla began as a popular dance song of Spain. The verse form was established and branched into variations by the 17th century. It has an alternating long short rhythm.

The Seguidilla is:
• stanzaic, written in any number of 2 part septets. (7 lines)
• syllabic, 7-5-7-5 : 5-7-5 per line. There is a slight pause between L4 and L5 suggesting L4 should be end-stopped.
• rhymed by assonance xAxABxB or xAxABAB. x being unrhymed. True rhyme is generally not used.
• composed with a volta or change in thought between L4 and L5.
• sometimes serves as a conclusion for another verse.

The clear vowels rise like balloons

Morning Song – S.Plath

The brightly coloured notes flare
Crystalline forms in the air

Written for Poetics: Beginning at the End at dVerse. Beginning at the end is tricky. Where to go from there. How to build upon and still be true to yourself. Two of the offered final lines made me think of synesthesia

More than a decade ago. A happy coincidence led to me working as a Lightjockey. Playing the lights, as the DJ played music. Together we played the dancefloor. 

During those years I discovered that I feel music to be a certain colour. Fitting to only certain light patterns. The rhythm may set the pace of the strobe, but the music shows me the intervals.

I even felt strongly enough about it, that it felt utterly wrong when a DJ or club promoter told me to use a certain light scheme because of their preferences.

Maybe it’s a form of ideasthesia…?

The Sylvia Plath quote made me think of all the choirs I sung in and try to paint a picture of what that could look like.
